The holiday break offers a precious opportunity to reconnect with our children, away from the usual rush of school, work and extracurricular activities. In a world dominated by screens and digital distractions, intentional family time has never been more important.

Creating Meaningful Moments

Ditch the Devices

Set clear boundaries around technology. Establish device-free zones and times where phones, tablets and computers are put away. This simple step creates space for genuine interaction and shows your children they have your undivided attention.

Plan Collaborative Activities

Engage in activities that bring everyone together:

Bake holiday cookies as a family.

Work on a challenging puzzle.

Create a holiday craft project.

Play board games or card games.

Start a family movie marathon with classic films.

Embrace Spontaneity

Some of the best memories come from unplanned moments. Leave room in your schedule for impromptu adventures, living room dance parties or unexpected conversations.

Making Memories, Not Just Passing Time

Share Stories

Use this time to share family history. Pull out old photo albums, tell stories about your childhood or create a family storytelling tradition. Children love hearing about their parents’ experiences and feeling connected to their family’s history.

Create New Traditions

Holiday breaks are perfect for establishing unique family rituals. These don’t have to be elaborate – they could be as simple as a special breakfast, an annual family photo or a game night.

Practical Tips for Quality Time

Be Present: When you’re with your kids, truly be with them. Put away work thoughts and focus on the moment.

Listen Actively: Ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest in their thoughts and experiences.

Mix Structured and Unstructured Time: Balance planned activities with free play and relaxation.

Follow Their Lead: Let your children sometimes choose the activity, showing them their interests are valued.

The Real Gift: Connection

Remember, the goal isn’t to fill every moment with activity, but to create an atmosphere of love, connection and mutual enjoyment. Quality time isn’t about perfection – it’s about presence.

This holiday break, challenge yourself to be fully engaged. Put away the distractions, open your heart and watch the magic of family connection unfold.

As we head into the colder months, flu season is just around the corner. Here at Luminous Childcare, we take the health of our students very seriously, and getting an annual flu shot is a top priority.

The flu virus poses serious risks both to young kids and older adults. Children under 5, especially those younger than 2, are at high risk of developing flu-related complications like pneumonia. The elderly also are vulnerable, with those 65 and older accounting for the majority of flu-related hospitalizations and deaths each year.

Those of us who interact with these high-risk populations have a responsibility to protect them from the flu. By getting vaccinated ourselves, we significantly reduce the chances of spreading the virus to the children and seniors in our care.

The Benefits of Flu Shots for Caregivers

Beyond safeguarding your vulnerable clients, there are several other good reasons to get a flu shot if you work with kids or the elderly:

Reduce your own risk: Even healthy adults can suffer complications from the flu, leading to missed work, doctor visits and extended illness. The flu shot greatly lowers your chances of getting sick.

Minimize missed work: When you’re healthy, you can continue providing the essential care and services your young or elderly clients depend on. Fewer sick days mean more reliable care.

Set a good example: By getting your annual flu vaccine, you demonstrate its importance to the families and patients you serve. This can encourage them to get vaccinated as well.

Protect your loved ones: Caring for high-risk individuals means you could bring the flu virus home to your own family members, including children or elderly relatives. The flu shot helps prevent this.

Getting Your Flu Shot

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine. For those of us who work with vulnerable populations, it’s an essential preventive measure.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the best time to get your flu shot. Many workplaces, clinics, and pharmacies also offer on-site vaccination clinics, making it easy and convenient.

Protecting our youngest and oldest community members is a responsibility we all share. By doing our part and getting an annual flu shot, we can help keep those in our care healthy and safe throughout the flu season.

You’ve heard this advice a million times but do these coaches really know what your life is like? “Taking care” sounds trite but rejuvenating yourself comes down to some really easy tasks. For example, each week, as you’re inputting events into that family calendar, schedule at least one event for yourself — a grocery trip or walk without your children, a pedicure, listening to your favorite music alone, maybe a weekend yoga class, or a haircut during your lunch break. Once your family sees you’re insistent about these mommy time-outs, they’ll come to accept them ─ maybe reluctantly at first but eventually they’ll grow accustomed to the idea, especially when mom seems happier.

It’s ok to be picky about how you spend time since, now that you’re a working parent, your time is more valuable than ever and your schedule isn’t as flexible as it used to be. How do you know when to say “yes” and when to say “no” ? If you’re feeling pressured or your stomach gets tight at the thought of saying “yes” to a social request, it’s probably not a good idea. Another alternative is to promise the person that you’ll respond in a few days after you’ve checked your schedule. This comeback takes practice but becomes easier when it’s repeated. You deserve not to be pressured into doing anything and to spend time doing what you want or need to do without any guilt!

Navigating Parenthood and Work Commitments

It’s a lot easier to stay focused at work when you know that your child is safe and secure at Luminous Early Childhood Learning Center in the Bronx. Like many of your fellow working parents, you must leave by a certain time each day to pick up your children. Once you’ve made your boss and co-workers aware of your commitment, it’s only fair that it be honored each day. Setting these expectations will help reduce your feelings of being overwhelmed. If you can also reach an understanding with your boss that you will be accessing your computer after hours only in special instances, it will also help keep your work responsibilities from encroaching on your family commitments.

If you are asked to stay late, calmly remind the group when you need to pick up your child and ask how you can help the next morning. While the response may not be warm and fuzzy, it’s important not to waiver from these reasonable expectations and the respect that you deserve.

Even though working parents have way more to do, they find ways to be productive and are seen as a reliable, valued workers. They make and follow a to-do list each day, are focused, avoid wasting time mindlessly checking email over and over, and minimize meal preparation time by planning ahead. The balance between work and parenthood is never perfect but using time productively leaves more time to enjoy the beautiful lives you’ve brought into the world — and that’s the biggest accomplishment of all.

How can a parent possibly keep track of each family member’s comings and goings in their head? Its’s just too much – no one can keep it all straight without a calendar! Help yourself stay sane by noting each week’s work schedules, who’s assigned to pick up the children ─ when and where ─ daycare closings, caretakers’ availability, visits from friends and family, activities, etc. You can use family organizer apps like Cozi or Hub and add a daily reminder on your smartphone to update the calendar. Or you can use a traditional wall calendar. If you go this route, look for one with a layout that allows enough space on each day for all your notes and use an erasable pen to make changes easy. A family calendar can turn chaos into calm and be your new best friend.

Is there a partner, friend, or family member in your “village” who can share some of the responsibilities? Would someone be able to regularly pick up diapers, formula, groceries, or sundries when they go shopping, do a load of wash, fetch your child from daycare, or babysit while you take a nap? It may be difficult at first to let go of your pre-baby routine but getting help during this new phase of your life will help you be a better parent and employee.

Plan meals weekly. Make a weekly menu, list the ingredients required, and make one shopping trip for everything. A roasted chicken or turkey breast is tasty and just needs warming. Frozen vegetables can be a good alternative to fresh ones that may perish if not used right away. If you run out of something, be brave ─ try substituting ingredients.

Prep over the weekend. If you’re missing your more complicated meals, do it when you have more time, like over the weekend or when baby’s sleeping or napping. Make enough for at least a few meals, and freeze what you’re not going to eat immediately.

Use your slow cooker if you have one, prepping ingredients the evening before so you just have to fill the pot and turn on before you leave for work! Voila, dinner is ready when you come home!

Prep finger foods. For those days when you’re too busy to make a meal, at least your little ones can still eat pretty well. Prep healthy finger foods like crumbled-up hard-boiled eggs, washed and finely chopped, baby-safe fruits and veggies, and small cubes of cheese. For teeny ones, you might try preparing purees ahead of time by storing them in ice cube trays to be thawed out when necessary.

When you’re missing time with your little one during your workday, it’s sometimes hard to say goodnight when playtime is so much fun! But then, where is the downtime for you that’s so important to your mental health? If you can bring yourself to stick to the same bedtime every night, your youngster will become accustomed to falling asleep at that time and you’ll discover the benefits of having a little time just for you.

Be sure to ask your Luminous child care team about how much your baby is sleeping during the day. At Luminous Early Childhood Learning Center in the Bronx and Brooklyn, NY, we welcome unannounced visits and walk-throughs so you can see what our normal routine is truly like. ‘Have questions about your little one’s care and well-being, especially on his or her first day? Next to your child’s care and development, keeping communications active and open with our parents is our most important goal.

Make a plan B for back-up day care – avoid a crisis.

Daily routines can change in a minute so it’s best to have a plan B. What will you do if our child care center is closed, you have a work deadline to meet, or you get sick? Once you’ve registered your child, it’s easy to get distracted from the importance of an emergency plan after your new schedule is in full swing. So before your child’s first day at our early childhood learning center, line up a backup sitter, family members, or close friend who you can call upon in a pinch. Getting to know a fellow mom in your neighborhood or church who is willing to help might also be a good idea. Having several back-up caregivers will ensure that you have coverage in case your go-to is unavailable.

Your sweet (but unpredictable!) baby.

Just as you’re about to leave home with baby in tow, you see your smiling baby with a diaper leak! Every parent who’s had this experience can relate to that surge of adrenaline when you realize you’re going to be late – very late. To keep stress to a minimum, prep for the morning as much as you can before you turn in. In plain sight, post a list of the tasks needed such as shower, pack lunches and snacks, prepare bottles/breast milk, lay out everyone’s clothes (including yours!), re-stock the diaper bag with a spare set of baby clothes, etc. Know how long it takes to drop off baby at your Luminous Early Childhood Learning Center and get to work. When life throws you a curve, you’ll be amazed at how much more relaxed you’ll feel if you follow these simple suggestions.

If you’re a mother of young baby, there are new topics to discuss and clarify with your employer. It’s perfectly reasonable for you to initiate this conversation before you give birth as it will help you and your employer understand what to expect when you return to work. Ask about:

Leave available for caring for sick children and well-baby visits. Ask your employer or manager about their policies. Can you work from home (if you’re not already) or on a flexible schedule? If you need two hours for a standard appointment, can you make up the time in the future?

Leave for yourself. Leave policies are not standardized, so ask about your employer’s baby bonding policy, paternity leave policy, personal leave, sick leave, and unpaid leave.

Designated breastfeeding area. Ask your employer about places that you can comfortably and privately pump. Federal law requires that any company of 50 employees or more provide breastfeeding moms with sufficient break time during the day to pump milk for their babies until age 1. The employer must also provide a private space other than a bathroom to pump. Check that there’s a refrigerator you can use to store your milk. If you’re going to be pumping at the office, dress accordingly so you can easily breastfeed without too much trouble. Also, try getting on a schedule so your coworkers understand when you will be away from your desk.
