Hi there parents! One of my favorite things to do with my little one is listen to music and dance. My kiddo and I are dancing queens and love to boogie down together. Besides being a lot of fun, dance parties help little ones grow.

In case you needed a bit of motivation to throw a dance party at home, here you go!

Music and Movement

Let’s start with some background on what music and movement is and why it’s so beneficial.

Music and movement are activities like dancing, jumping, clapping and playing instruments. According to Northern Illinois University’s Child Development and Family Center, music and movement can help “improve balance, coordination, and rhythm through dance and movement.”

It also encourages group activities, social skills, expressing emotions, creativity, and in learning new words and concepts. Not to mention, it’s pretty fun for us grown-ups, too!

Language Development

The more you and your kiddo dance around to these songs, you are secretly working on their language development, too! Little ones will learn new words and work on their listening as well.

You can use popular songs that your kiddo might already know, such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “The Wheels on the Bus.”

The song “If You’re Happy and You Know It” encourages kiddos to stomp, clap and sing along with the cues in the song, which also means working on those gross and fine motor skills. “The Wheels on the Bus” boosts those memory skills by remembering the motions that go along with each verse.

Freeze Dance

Another fun way to encourage music and movement in your home is to try out a freeze dance game. Freeze dance is a wonderful way for your little one to practice self regulation and self control.

And all those funky dance moves and attempting to move to the beat is encouraging your kiddo to control their body and avoid falling.

Move and Make Noise

These fun songs and dancing also encourage our little ones to express themselves, move their bodies around, and make noise in an environment where that is the intention and therefore totally okay.

Clapping or playing instruments such as drums can be great for sequencing through patterns and gaining a sense of rhythm.

Fun for Life

Encouraging your little one to listen to music, dance around and sing along is also introducing them to what could very well be a wonderful hobby.

Finding and listening to music is an activity that many adults find to be helpful in decompressing and expressing emotions.

Introducing your little one to music at a young age could become a lifelong interest or even blossom into an interest in playing music themselves.
